The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Sets Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
It has been 30 years after the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and bringing audiences to iconic characters like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the plot but leaving fans wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Gang
The preview shows Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the toys appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), traveling with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Previous Film
At the very least, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the insignia pinned to her outfit.
Hopefully she is still the key figure among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
