French authorities to begin stopping small boats in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader urging him to support the initiative and stating there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French maritime police representative states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
